The Blair girls soccer team didn't score until its third match last weekend, but once the Bears found the back of the net they found it again and again.
After losses to Class B No. 2 Omaha Mercy and Class A No. 7 Papillion-La Vista to open the season, coach Brandon Palmer's first BHS squad scored 10 goals Saturday in Plattsmouth. It scored them all during a 10-0 victory over Schuyler.
Splitting the goals evenly across two halves, sophomore Keara Chaffee scored four times, while Abby Hartvigsen tallied three. The Bears' most experienced high school forward, junior Sami Murray, added two more and freshman Katie Kramer had one.
The 10 goals came just after the Bears surrendered 10 to the Monarchs in a 10-0 loss to open the Blue Devils' tourney. Undeterred, Palmer's lineup shrugged off two scoreless matches with a rout against the Warriors.
BHS opens with 2-0 defeat
The Bears didn't score during Thursday's season opener against No. 2 Mercy at Krantz Field, but Palmer wasn't bothered by the goose egg.
BHS had opportunities, including one early.
Chaffee, playing in her first high school match, dribbled the ball downfield during the seventh minute, ending her effort with a shot on goal stopped by the Monarchs keeper.
“If we score that early goal, if Keara scores that early goal, it's a completely different match,” Palmer said. “It's going to go in a different direction.”
Unfortunately, it went the way it did.
“Instead, we give one (goal) up shortly after,” Palmer said.
Mercy's Elizabeth Rosenthal scored during the 15th minute before Mel Davis pushed the Monarch lead to 2-0 during the 26th.
The Bears continued to stress the leaders' defense, though. Palmer guessed his team held possession of the ball for 60 to 70 percent of the first half. They continually sent cross passes through the Mercy box, but with only player in position to threaten the Mercy keeper.
Ultimately, the Blair coach felt his team played a “good” 60 minutes during the 80-minute match.
“For a first game, I'm pleasantly surprised as young is this roster is,” Palmer said.
Chaffee, a midfielder, stood out for her dribbling skills and agility.
“I think her and Allison Hernandez, and Valeria Hernandez in the midfield, are completely, 100-percent dangerous in Class B,” Palmer said.
He also noted a trio of defenders who impressed — Trinity Back, Madeline Dirkschneider and Sally Kies.
“There's a lot to build on,” Palmer said.
One of the few Bears with varsity experience alongside Dirkschneider — Murray — had a few opportunities at scoring BHS' first goal since the 2019 season, too. The junior registered a shot on goal during the 46th minute and made a run during the 57th that was stopped by an offsides whistle.
Allison Hernandez later took a corner kick with 15 minutes to go, and a late shot nearly made the net before a defender stopped it, but the Bears finished scoreless. Scoreless, but not without enthusiasm for what was next.
“A lot of positive came out of tonight, playing against a team that was supposed to, I think, completely handle us,” Palmer said, noting preseason Class B rankings.
Two days later, the BHS picked up its first win in nearly two years with 10 goals.
