Lonnie Walker IV had an incredible game tonight, with a career-high 31 points, but the San Antonio Spurs inability to slow down the Milwaukee Bucks offense kept them from making up the deficit they fell into with a spate of poor play just before the half that put them into a hole. The Spurs missed the defense of Dejounte Murray tonight, as he was rested on the second night of a back to back, but were able to make a contest of the game for much of the night, until the Bucks pulled away late in the fourth quarter to win by seven with Giannis leading the way.
Observations
- I’m splitting time between this game and the Longhorns tournament game, because as a UT Austin grad, I kind of have to. But I’ll spend most of my time watching the Spurs, because they’re cool.
- The score was wrong for a good part of the first quarter because Keldon was only given two points for an obvious three-point shot. It took several minutes to correct it, and it was not fun, because you never know if they’re actually going to correct the score.
- Drew Eubanks shot a triple in the first quarter, and it was so slow that Bobby Portis missed the block. Drew chased it to the basket, sure it was a miss, but it hit nothing but net.
- Giannis went to the locker room in the first quarter, and returned at the start of the second quarter. I’m not sure what happened, but he looked fine when he returned to the court.
- The Spur usually play at least one terrible quarter in each game, Tonight it was the second.
- DiVicenzo is pretty good. He gets a lot of space to operate because he plays with Giannis, but he really takes advantage of it.
- I don’t remember Bryn Forbes hitting this many clutch shots when he wore the Silver and Black.
- Keldon’s ability to finish in a crowd is impressive. Sometimes you can’t even see him in the trees, until the ball goes through the hoop.
Game Flow
The Spurs used acrobatic moves from Lonnie Walker IV and DeMar DeRozan to keep pace with the Bucks for most of the quarter, but a late rush keyed by an unusual Drew Eubanks triple led the Spurs to a 33-26 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Spurs got off to a quick start in the second quarter, and quickly stretched the lead to double digits. Then known Spurs killer Bryn Forbes led the Bucks on a 15-0 lead to retake the lead as the Spurs suddenly lost the ability to play basketball. With all of the turnovers and poor play, the Spurs trailed 57-50 at the break.
The Spurs turned up the defense in the third, and Lonnie Walker stepped into his shots confidently to pull the Spurs to within a point halfway through the third. The Spurs finally broke through to regain the lead with 37 seconds left, but the Bucks scored the last 5 points of the quarter, with Jrue Holiday scoring the last three on free throws by luring Devin Vassell into fouling him with less than a second left, to lead 88-84 after three.
The Spurs kept up the pressure in the final frame, but Giannis was able to get into the paint, and every time the Spurs cut the lead to a few points, it seemed like Giannis would draw the entire Spurs defense to him, and give a teammate an easy scoring opportunity. The Spurs were having no trouble scoring, but the lack of stops doomed them, as the Bucks won 120-113.
