YOUNGSTOWN — Stephen P. Harvey, an alumnus of the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, will teach a new online class, Survey of Hip-Hop, starting in the second YSU summer session, which begins June 29.
The course includes the study of the culture of hip-hop and its origins, foundation and progressions; related musical genres and subgenres; and its cultural, societal and historical intersections.
The course is available to registered YSU students as an arts and humanities elective.
"As a student and lover of music, rap music has been a large portion of my listening experience growing up,” Harvey said in a news release. “As one of the most prevalent black American art musics, it has given a pervasive view into the lives of black and Latinx populations in urban America."
Harvey earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Seton Hill University in 2014 and a master’s degree in jazz studies from Youngstown State University in 2016.
As a musician and bandleader, Harvey has performed in Western Pennsylvania, Northeast Ohio and the eastern shore of Maryland. He performs in three of his own ensembles, including the jazz duo/trio Harvey Allen, his midsize jazz combo SPH8 and his large ensemble, the Stephen Philip Harvey Jazz Orchestra.
He also has performed professionally with the First Class Big Band, The Akron Symphony Big Band, The Ohio Players, The Youngstown Jazz Collective, The Big Nasty, The Black Wolf and the Thief, The Vindy's, The House of Leaves Band and other musical projects.
As a composer and arranger, Harvey has worked with a variety of musicians and instrumentations and has composed for solo instruments, wind ensembles, jazz combos and large ensembles.
In May 2016, Harvey released his debut album, “Suite Childhood.”
