A police officer has been suspended pending an internal investigation into a social-media post that has sparked fury in the community.

Commissioner of Police Stephen Corbishley this afternoon called the post “despicable”, saying: “Not only do I understand the mood in the community, I share it. It was an abhorrent post.”

He added: “Even more disappointing is the fact that we have repeatedly advised officers in regards to not just the perils of social media, but the fact that their role is to support the community.”

Earlier this weekend he acknowledged anger over the post, which said: “All Lives Splatter. Nobody cares about your protest.”

It was posted by the officer in the run-up to a demonstration planned today by the group Black Lives Bermuda, which aims to highlight systemic racism and inequality in Bermuda.

Mr Corbishley said in a Facebook post yesterday: “We took the decision to suspend a police officer yesterday following an allegation that was brought to our attention about a social-media issue.

“We have got to investigate the matter and, while suspension is not an indication of guilt because we do need to establish the facts, we do take that decision when public confidence is necessary.

“It was felt that on this occasion the officer cannot continue working as a police officer and is suspended until the matter is fully examined.”

He added today: “The Bermuda Police Service acknowledges the anger and frustration that has arisen as a result of the disturbing social-media post by an officer of the Bermuda Police Service.

“That image is not in line with the core values and ethos of the BPS.

“The officer in question has been suspended and the disciplinary process has commenced.”

Mr Corbishley said several officers had brought the matter to the attention of the police’s Professional Standards Department.

He said: “That reflects the commitment to address acts of misconduct by the service at all levels.

“I have always maintained that diversity and inclusion are the hallmark of a well-balanced community and organisation. During my time as commissioner, I have sought to promote embracing our differences and celebrating our commonalities.

“It is clear that there is still work that must be done and I am committed to ensuring we, as an organisation, understand the value that everyone brings to this community.”
