A local company plans to reopen a Myrtle Creek golf course soon.
Sean Negherbon, City Administrator for the City of Myrtle Creek, told News Radio 1240 KQEN that their city council has given its approval to his preparing a lease agreement with Umpqua Golf Management for the company to operate the former Cougar Canyon Golf Course, which closed in October of last year.
Negherbon said the City will pay the power bill for the irrigation pumps for a three-year period as well as replace the roof on the clubhouse. The company will operate the course and dispose of the City’s effluent water. Negherbon said other details are still be worked out but the lease will give the company time to establish a profitable operation at the course.
Scott Simpson at Umpqua Golf Management told KQEN they plan a soft opening on July 1st. He said there is a lot of maintenance to due prior to opening. He said while the tees, greens and fairways have been mowed since the course was closed, they need to have lots of sand applied. He said rough in excess of 3 feet has to be mowed and removed. Simpson said other cleaning is going on along with painting in parts of the clubhouse and kitchen.
Simpson said the company plans on running the facility for at least ten years. Umpqua Golf Management already operates the Oak Hills Golf Club in Sutherlin, and the Stewart Park Golf Course in Roseburg. Simpson said the south county facility will go back to using the name, Myrtle Creek Golf Course.
Negherbon said city officials believe the company will be successful because of their other local golf operations, and their awareness of the golf culture in the county.
