PORTSMOUTH — With everything happening in the world right now, Great Bay Community College wants to give people the chance to pause, regroup and refocus.

For four Tuesdays in July, the Portsmouth college is offering a new course, "the Fundamentals of Mindfulness," which will teach people to make better choices, lower stress, release worry and regret, and live more relaxed, empathetic lives.

Certified mindfulness instructor Liz Korabek-Emerson will lead the non-credit course, which will convene online via Zoom from noon to 1:30 p.m. beginning July 7 and each Tuesday in July.

Korabek-Emerson lives in Eliot, Maine, and has been teaching mindfulness since 2012. She teaches students how to incorporate what she calls "small, accessible practices" that strengthen one’s ability to be more present in our daily life and in tune with inner self. Being more mindful helps us process our fears and reduce our stress, she said.

"In all my mindfulness courses that I teach and the workshops that I offer, I place a big emphasis on the practical – all the small ways we can integrate mindfulness into our daily lives so we can respond skillfully to our life situation. And when I say skillfully, I mean not over-reacting where everything is a crisis and under-reacting where we are denying or ignoring things."

Great Bay decided to offer the professional development course now to give people the tools to respond to the turmoil in the world, said Lynn Szymanski, program manager for Workforce Development.

"During all of this upheaval in our lives, we thought it would be great to give people a midday break and carve some time to just focus on themselves. We know everyone is busy and a lunchtime class might be a convenient time," she said.

Because Great Bay is located at Pease International Tradeport, the college initially thought of helping the employees of companies there, whether they are in the office or working from home.

"But because one of the benefits of a mindfulness practice is lower stress, I realized that folks who have been laid off would also benefit. We put this course under professional development because studies show that those who practice mindfulness perform better at work and are generally more satisfied with their jobs," Szymanski said. "However, the tools that Liz shares work equally well in our personal lives as well."

Korabek-Emerson will dedicate 10 minutes of each class to breathing meditation, to develop a sense of focus and teach students how to be better listeners, how to blend with the environment, how to use technology effectively and how to identify and deal with distractions.

"This class is designed to train the mind to be focused, to be open and to be flexible," she said.
