GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Several weeks after announcing that the coming school year will see a mix of online and in-person classes, Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) now says it will waive fees for online courses.

Students enrolled in distance classes for the 2020-2021 academic year will save $16 per contact hour, or about $50 for a three-credit class, according to Monday, June 15 press release.

They will still be responsible for tuition and other universal fees. The college’s universal fees typically cover technology, record keeping, facilities and student activities, with some classes also requiring additional charges for materials.

GRCC’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved waiving the online fees as part of a $112.9 million budget approved Monday.

State aid is a significant part of the college’s funding, and lawmakers have not yet set a budget for the next fiscal year. The budget anticipates a potential cut to state funding of 15 percent, in the wake of COVID-19.

Board of trustees Chairman David Koetje said the budget is a fiscally responsible and sustainable plan at a time of great uncertainty.

In April, the board raised tuition 1.7 percent for 2020-21, increasing the resident or in-district tuition rate by $2 to $117 per contact hour. Next year, the total cost for a full-time student will be $3,969 for the year.

Like many colleges across the state, GRCC was dramatically affected by COVID-19, campus leaders previously told MLive. The college’s campuses in Kent and Ottawa counties closed in March, and students transitioned to working remotely, while the school distributed meals and textbooks to students in need.

It is likely that many classes will remain online-only, administrators have said, and the school is working to establish new protocols in order to reopen some portions of on-campus learning.

“We’re proud to be the place this community turns to in times of great need,” GRCC President Bill Pink said in the press release.

“We are making difficult decisions as we await learning about our state funding. But we are not compromising on our goal of keeping a quality college education within reach for everyone in a safe environment, whether they are looking for credits for degrees or to transfer, or for career skills leading to good jobs.”
