EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants lost to the New York Jets, xx-7, in Saturday’s preseason opener at MetLife Stadium.
With Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, Kenny Golladay, Evan Engram, Sterling Shepard, Kadarius Toney and John Ross all not playing, this was anything but a pretty offensive performance by the Giants. Toney is apparently dealing with an undisclosed injury.
The Giants had only 92 yards of total offense after three quarters.
The Giants finally came to life in the fourth quarter after T.J. Brunson forced a fumble at midfield and Rodarius Williams returned it to the Jets’ 17-yard line. three plays later, quarterback Clayton Thorson threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Damion Willis to make the score 10-7 with 7:05 to play.
Thorson was sacked for a safety with 1:39 to play for the final score of 12-7. Thorson appeared to be injured on the play, and was assisted off the field.
The Giants’ starting defenders did not play, though sub-package players likely to play roles at various times during the season did see extensive action.
The only scoring of the first half came on a 30-yard field goal by Chris Naggar of the Jets with 7:56 left in the first quarter. That was the Jets’ opening possession, a 12-play, 52-yard drive that took 6:06.
The Jets got a third-quarter touchdown on a 4-yard run by La’Mical Perine. That concluded an 11-play, 68-yard drive that took 5:54.
“The objective tonight was to evaluate our players,” said head coach Joe Judge. “There were a lot of things tonight that were positive on an individual basis.”
Stats
Starting quarterback Mike Glennon went 3 of 7 for 20 yards. Clayton Thorson went just 5 of 16 for 72 yards.
Corey Clement had five carries for 32 yards, but fumbled inside the Jets’ 5-yard line. Sandro Platzgummer led the Giants with 51 yards rushing on just four carries, including a 48-yard run.
David Sills continued a strong bid to make the 53-man roster with four catches for 49 yards. Included in that was a nice grab for 37 yards on a pass from Clayton Thorson. Tight end Rysen John had four catches for 14 yards.
Offensive line notes
The first-team offensive line played three series, going into the second quarter. It wasn’t pretty.
- Bryce Huff blew past right tackle Matt Peart for a third-down sack on the Giants’ first possession.
- Remember my recent 53-man roster projection? I had veteran guard Kenny Wiggins making the team, but wrote that “I have him making the roster, for now, but I won’t be shocked if he doesn’t stick.” Wiggins struggled mightily in pass protection, giving up several pressures in the first half. He also missed a block on a third-quarter run play that got Alfred MOrris crushed in the backfield.
- Undrafted free agent guard Jake Burton might be a name to remember. He appeared to have a nice night.
- Kyle Murphy, an undrafted free agent who split last season between the practice squad and 52-man roster, left the game after a first-half ankle injury.
Zach Wilson
I know, of course, that Wilson plays for the Jets. Still, it was interesting to watch the second overall pick in the draft. He went 6 of 9 for 63 yards with a long completion of 16 yards and a passer rating 86.8. I would think Jets fans are excited about what they saw.
Bright spots
- Veteran defensive tackle Danny Shelton showed a glimpse of what the Giants signed him for. He made big stops on both third-and-1 and fourth-and-1 plays in the first half.
- Wide receiver Matt Cole, claimed off waivers from the Jets just a week ago, showed up on special teams. He made an excellent play to tip-toe the goal line and bat back a Riley Dixon punt that teammates downed at the 9-yard line. He also had a tackle, and got an opportunity as the kickoff returner.
- Carter Coughlin was exceptionally active in the second half. Coughlin had a strip sack and five tackles, including one for loss.
Injuries
- As noted above, guard Kyle Murphy left the game with an ankle injury.
- Tight end Cole Hikutini, who has had a good training camp, left the game with a hip injury.
What’s next
The Giants will practice Tuesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center. They will then travel to Ohio for joint practices on Thursday and Friday with the Cleveland Browns before facing the Browns in Game 2 of the preseason on Sunday at 1 p.m.
