Hood's late score lifts No. 2 Richmond past No. 4 Butler, 32-29 - HighSchoolOT

— Quarterback Kellan Hood channeled some Raider Magic of his own on Saturday night.

Richmond got the ball back with about six minutes left in the fourth quarter while trailing Butler 29-25. Hood kept the drive alive with a few big runs, including one that was good for 30 yards. Then, with 3:43 left, Hood scored the game-winner on a three-yard rush as Richmond beat Butler 32-29.

In the first half, it felt as if the game may be a shootout. Butler scored on the first play of the game when Eli Sylvester caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from Xavion Brower, giving Butler an early 7-0 lead.

Hood scored his first touchdown of the game at the end of the first quarter, but the extra-point was blocked and Richmond trailed 7-6 going into the second quarter.

On its ensuing possession, Butler built on its lead. Brower scored a touchdown on a two-yard run, and the Bulldogs' lead was pushed to eight points at 14-6 with 11:29 left in the second quarter.

But Richmond answered quickly. Nasir Crumpton broke a 70-yard touchdown run on the next play from scrimmage for the Raiders, but Taye Spencer was stopped on the two-point conversion attempt. Butler still held a small lead at 14-12 with 11:13 left before half.

After a defensive stop by the Raiders, Hood gave Richmond its first lead of the game. Somehow the senior quarterback managed to escape a couple sacks, then found Trey Thomas for an 18-yard touchdown. Once again, Butler stopped the two-point attempt, but Richmond led 18-14.

Hood made the lead two scores just before halftime when he scored on a two-yard run. Richmond led Butler 25-14 at the break.

The third quarter started slow for both offenses, but it was Butler that struck first. Brower scored on a keeper and the Bulldogs converted the two-point try to close the gap with Richmond, trailing 25-22 at the end of the third quarter.

Brower gave Butler the lead again early in the fourth quarter. The quarterback found Travon Tensley for a 35-yard touchdown pass after a botched punt by Richmond gave the Bulldogs great field position. Butler led 29-25 with 9:53 left.

Richmond's offense was unable to get much going on its next possession, but a defensive play gave the Raiders some momentum. Gabe Altman recovered a Bulldog fumble at the Richmond 43-yard line with 6:33 left, and the Raiders took advantage.

Behind big plays from Hood, the Raiders marched down the field and capped off the drive with Hood's three-yard score to put the Raiders on top for good at 32-29.

Hood finished the game with 23 carries for 144 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 8-of-14 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions.

Brower was the bright spot for Butler. He completed 16-of-30 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns, while carrying the ball 11 times for 21 yards and two more scores. Sylvester was Brower's top receiver, catching four passes for 132 yards and a touchdown.

Richmond returns to action on Friday when it hosts No. 3 Cardinal Gibbons at 7:30 p.m. Butler will play again next Saturday in Washington, D.C., where it will face St. John's (DC) at 2 p.m.
