49ers at Chargers NFL preseason score, takeaways: Trey Lance's two scores help San Francisco edge Los Angeles - CBSSports.com

Sunday night played host to a West Coast showdown, with the Chargers taking on the 49ers in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. The highlight of the evening at SoFi Stadium? Quarterback battles on both sides. San Francisco's competition has higher stakes, with Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance vying for the No. 1 job, but Los Angeles' own battle -- Chase Daniel versus Easton Stick for the No. 2 role behind Justin Herbert -- proved to be one of the biggest storylines of the cross-conference clash. In the end, the 49ers claimed a close victory, 15-10, even if their immediate future under center remains a bit cloudy.

Here are some more takeaways from Sunday night's matchup between the Chargers and 49ers:

Why the 49ers won

Most of the credit belongs to the first-half players, who got San Francisco out in front to begin with. That means Trey Lance, who overcame an erratic start to lead two different touchdown drives and showcase both deep touch and short-area precision along the way. It also means the 49ers' second-team defensive line, which kept Chargers QB Easton Stick under pressure early and often, while also stuffing L.A.'s early ground efforts. Later, the Niners really leaned on their run game and defense to finish the job, with Wayne Gallman and JaMycal Hasty combining for 130 rushing yards and five different defenders, including reserves Jordan Willis and Kentavius Street, logging a sack.

Why the Chargers lost

What little spark they had with Stick in the first half vanished when the Chargers turned to the second leg of their backup QB competition and thrust longtime No. 2 Chase Daniel under center. Brandon Staley's defense remained fairly stingy throughout the night, with everyone from Asante Samuel Jr. to Cole Christiansen to Jessie Lemonier making plays. But the run game was nonexistent outside of Stick's scrambling, and Daniel, for all his own attempts to extend plays, mustered just 60 yards on 21 passes behind a makeshift O-line. Staley made it a point to rest many of his starters, and it showed, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

Turning point

Lance pulled San Francisco within two just before halftime thanks to a nice scoring drive capped by a Travis Benjamin touchdown catch, but Chase Daniel did nothing with his first series under center for L.A. in the second half. The Chargers' quick three-and-out preceded an 11-play TD drive from Lance and Co. to put the Niners up for good.

Play of the game

Trey Lance had a couple of beautiful throws, including a floater to Trent Sherfield and a bullet touchdown to Travis Benjamin, but this award belongs to none other than Easton Stick, who eluded pressure up until the last minute before firing the game's first TD:

What's next

The Chargers (1-1) will close their 2021 preseason by visiting the Seahawks on Saturday, Aug. 28. The 49ers (1-1) will play their third and final preseason game against the Raiders on Sunday, Aug. 29.
