A 30-year-old Hoover man has been formally charged after authorities say he slashed the tires on dozens of police vehicles, fired on officers, and led authorities on a more than six-hour manhunt.

The search for Bradley Hunter Smith began about 7:30 p.m. Sunday along the U.S. 31 corridor and ended about 2:23 a.m. on Hoover Country Club’s golf course.

Smith is charged with attempted murder and first-degree criminal mischief. He is awaiting transfer to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held without bond.

Authorities said they recovered two handguns near where Smith had been hiding.

Lt. Keith Czeskleba said Hoover police have had no prior criminal dealings with Smith, and court records do not list any previous arrests in Alabama. Police had once incident where Smith was taken to a local hospital.

A manhunt was underway after a man slashed police tires and fired shots at officers in Hoover.

A perimeter was set up and notifications were made to the local residents to shelter in place. Residents in the Green Valley area were encouraged to lock their doors, turn on all outside lights and alarm systems.

They were also asked to call 911 if they saw someone suspicious but were asked to refrain from calling 911 with questions about the ongoing search.

An alert was sent to multiple residents in the area that read, “Hoover Police have an armed individual on foot in your area. Please stay inside and call 911 if you see or hear anything.”

Officers methodically searched the area and captured the suspect early Monday on the golf course. He peacefully surrendered and was taken into custody by the Hoover Police Special Response Team without incident, Czeskleba said.
