Monday night at Truist Park the two hottest teams in baseball will open a quick little two-game interleague series. The New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves both go into Monday's game having won their last nine games. It is the first time since 1901 that two teams riding a nine-plus game winning streak will meet. Atlanta's nine-game winning streak has moved the club into first place in the NL East at 68-56. They have a comfortable-ish five-game lead over the second place Phillies. As recently as 15 days ago, the Braves were in third place in the division.
As for the Yankees, their nine-game winning streak has vaulted them into the first AL wild card spot. They are 72-52 and have two-game lead over the Red Sox for the top wild card spot, and a 2 1/2-game lead over the Athletics for a wild card spot in general. New York is 4 1/2 games behind the idle Rays in the AL East.
Monday's pitching matchup pits lefty Jordan Montgomery (4-5, 3.77 ERA) against righty Huascar Ynoa (4-2, 2.70 ERA). Ynoa recently missed three months after breaking his hand punching a bench. This will be his second start back. Montgomery missed time with COVID-19 earlier this month and has a 3.14 ERA in his last nine starts.
