Final score: Chiefs defeat 49ers 19-16 in first preseason game - Arrowhead Pride

It wasn’t the most exciting night for the first-team offense and defense — but at the end of the game, the Kansas City Chiefs won their exhibition over the San Francisco 49ers 19-16.

The Chiefs’ defense started the game, allowing a seven-play drive that eventually ended in a punt. On the first play, safety Dan Sorensen missed an open-field tackle that resulted in a 13-yard gain — and there wasn’t much penetration from the pass rush on the four passing plays the 49ers ran.

After the punt return, the Chiefs’ offense started well with a 10-yard run up the middle by running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire — with a noticeably good push from the offensive line. However, they stalled on the next three plays and were forced to punt.

With the first-team defense still on the field, 49ers’ rookie quarterback Trey Lance took the field. They only mustered two yards on his first two plays, then defensive end Chris Jones — lined up at defensive tackle — beat the guard quickly and brought down Lance for a sack on third down.

Backup quarterback Chad Henne entered the game on the offense’s second drive — and led them on a 39-yard scoring drive that took six plays. It was aided by an obvious defensive pass interference on a throw to wide receiver Tyreek Hill. After converting on a third-and-short with a Edwards-Helaire run — behind a pulling block by right guard Trey Smith — Henne found Byron Pringle for a five-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.

On the following 49ers’ drive, Lance went deep on the first play — and succeeded with an 80-yard catch-and-run touchdown. On the first snap he took, undrafted rookie safety Devon Key got beat in his zone, not taking the right angle to take away the deep route. The 49ers missed the ensuing extra point, making the score 7-6.

Two plays into the Chiefs’ next drive, it was over. A throw to rookie tight end Noah Gray on the sideline was a little behind him; it bounced off his hands and pads into the defender’s grasp for an interception.

San Francisco emphasized its running game on the next drive, doing it most of the time on the eight-play drive. However, reserve linebacker Omari Cobb came free on a blitz and earned a sack to set up third-and-long — and the Chiefs’ held with good pressure from defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton. San Francisco converted a field goal to make it 9-7.

The rest of the first half didn’t produce a score. Running back Jerick McKinnon made some positive plays on offense. There was impressive pass-rush penetration from the entire defensive line throughout the second quarter. Defensive end Tim Ward got a sack on a great speed rush around the right edge, and Wharton forced a fumble by Lance — who landed on it.

The third quarter opened with the Chiefs on offense. Third-string quarterback Anthony Gordon — who had ended the second half — led the Chiefs on a 12-play drive that gained 50 yards. Wide receiver Daurice Fountain was featured — and running back Darwin Thompson converted a short-yard run on fourth down. The possession ended in a successful field goal to make the score 10-9 Chiefs.

The Chiefs’ defense forced a quick punt on the next drive, with cornerback Deandre Baker breaking up a pass to force fourth down. It was his second defended pass of the game.

Undrafted rookie Shane Buechele took the snaps on the second drive of the third quarter, but they had a quick three-and-out.

On the following drive, the Chiefs defense allowed a handful of big plays for first-down conversions. San Francisco got into the red zone — but safety Armani Watts came away with an easy interception on an off-target pass to end the scoring threat.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the offense quickly went three-and-out. The reserve defense came back to force a fumble; undrafted rookie cornerback DiCaprio Bootle recovered the ball to force a turnover. The ensuing drive ended in another sack of Buechele.

For the rest of the contest, the defense held tough — including a third-down blitz by Bootle that forced a pass short of the sticks. The offense took over from there and got into position to tack on a field goal, making the score 13-9 with four minutes to go.

But the 49ers made a push to regain the lead. A big kick return was followed by a 34-yard run to get the 49ers into the red zone. After a few more big runs, San Francisco punched in a short run to take a 16-13 lead with two minutes remaining.

The reserve offense looked to make a late-game comeback; big receptions by wide receiver Cornell Powell, running back Elijah McGuire and tight end Jody Fortson got them in scoring position. On third-and-goal, Buechele kept the ball and ran it in to take a 19-16 lead.

The defense held the 49ers’ offense down on the final drive to secure the victory, ending with Tim Ward’s second sack of the night.

Injuries

Linebacker Darius Harris did walk to the locker room at one point in the first half, but came back to the sideline shortly after. In the second half, the team officially announced he would not return to the game.

Late in the third quarter, Deandre Baker went down on the field and was helped to the sideline.

Special Teams

Cornerback Mike Hughes showed a little pop on a punt return and kick return; he got the first opportunity in both phases.

In the second quarter, punter Tommy Townsend booted a 66-yard punt that was downed at the one-yard line. Later in the same period, he landed a punt at the Chiefs’ 12-yard line.

Right before halftime, the Chiefs sent kicker Harrison Butker out to attempt a 62-yard field goal. It was right down the middle — but a few feet short.

Butker got two more chances at field goals in the second half — nailing a 52-yard attempt on the first drive of the third quarter and a 46-yard kick later.

Jerick McKinnon made a great tackle on punt coverage in the third quarter.

Butker missed the extra point that followed the last touchdown of the game; it bounced off the left upright.
