The Mets beat the Nationals for the second straight game, winning 4-1 . Marcus Stroman took the mound and pitched very well in the extreme heat, going into the sixth inning in a seven inning game.
The Mets’ bats seemed to come more alive today, producing 12 hits, however some of their woes at the plate continued, as they were only able to score four runs and left seven men on base. All four of the Mets’ runs were driven in by Brandon Nimmo, the first three thanks to a three-run homer in the second inning, and the fourth with an RBI single in the fourth.
After cruising through most of his outing, Marcus Stroman found himself in trouble in the top of the sixth, after allowing a leadoff walk and then back-to-back hits. This allowed the Nationals to score their first run of the game, with the tying run now at the plate. After Stroman struck out Alcides Escobar to get the first out of the inning, Aaron Loup came in the game to face the dangerous Juan Soto. Soto worked an impressive at bat, taking it to nine pitches and drawing a walk. Loup was then able to get Josh Bell to ground into a double play, aided by an acrobatic catch and tag by Pete Alonso to save multiple runs and escape the inning.
Edwin Diaz then worked around a one out double in the seventh inning to get the save and secure another much needed win for the Mets.
