Final Score: Phillies 8, Mets 2— LOBsters, LOBsters, everywhere - Amazin' Avenue

With the chance to earn a series win and build on their Tuesday victory, the Mets flopped on Wednesday afternoon to drop the game and the series to the Phillies.

It became evident from the onset that this would be a long day for New York. David Peterson took the hill looking to give his team a strong showing, and instead he was bombarded for four runs in the first inning. Philadelphia got on the board first with a Rhys Hoskins solo home run, and after a Bryce Harper double and a J.T. Realmuto walk, Alec Bolm unloaded on a three-run home run. Peterson labored in that first frame, throwing 38 pitches and getting to five three-ball counts.

Peterson settled down over the next three innings, but he was removed after allowing the first two runners in the fifth to reach base. Jacob Barnes came in and promptly allowed a three-run home run to Realmuto on the first pitch he threw for the club. That essentially put the game well out of reach, as the Phillies built a six-run lead.

The Mets turned in an equally-miserable offensive showing, going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and leaving 14 more runners on base after leaving 10 on base on Monday and six more last night. Michael Conforto had an especially brutal night, going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts and leaving nine runners on base over the course of the night.

The Mets scored their first run in the third, courtesy of a Pete Alonso single which drove home Brandon Nimmo. They added a run in the seventh on a wild pitch which brought home Jonathan Villar. In his first game for the Mets, Villar went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, although his strikeout to end the third left a couple of runners on base in a critical spot when the game was still within reach.

Joey Lucchesi appeared in relief and pitched the final two innings, tossing two scoreless frames and collecting three strikeouts.
