The Mets made it three wins in a row against the Phillies with a 5-1 victory on Wednesday night to improve their record to 5-3. With the win, the Mets jumped into sole possession of first place in the National League East.
David Peterson made his second straight start against Philadelphia, and this one went significantly better than the last. After giving up six runs in four-plus innings on April 7, he tossed six innings of one-run ball while matching his career high with ten strikeouts. He allowed just two hits and didn’t issue a walk. His fastball routinely hit 94-95mph, while his slider was working well throughout the outing.
New York’s offense, meanwhile, jumped on ex-Met Zack Wheeler in the first inning, picking up three straight singles from Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor, and Dominic Smith to plate the first run of the game. Pete Alonso grounded into a double play to bring home the club’s second run. Wheeler settled down from there and pitched into the seventh, but he was removed after allowing one-out singles to Lindor and Smith. Alonso hit a sacrifice fly off of Sam Coonrod in relief to give the Mets a much-needed insurance run. James McCann put the game away with a two-run home run in the eighth.
The bullpen bent but didn’t break in the seventh and the eight, as a combination of Jeurys Familia and Aaron Loup pitched two shutout innings while dancing around danger. Edwin Díaz closed the game with a scoreless ninth.
