The Mets pulled off an exciting walk-off victory in extra innings against the Phillies in the first game of today’s doubleheader.
Taijuan Walker delivered a strong performance in his second Mets start, surrendering just one run over 4 2⁄3 innings of work. He struck out eight batters, the most he has struck out in any game since before his Tommy John surgery. After yielding two walks in a row with one out in the fifth inning, Walker was taken out of the game in favor of Miguel Castro, who bailed him out of the inning thanks to a key strikeout of Andrew McCutchen and a botched double steal by the Phillies.
Castro stayed in for the sixth inning and pitched admirably, but was bitten by a leadoff walk to Rhys Hoskins, who scored on an infield hit by Jean Segura, tying the game at two runs apiece. The Mets had the winning run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but Dominic Smith struck out swinging to make the Mets 0-for-6 on the day with runners in scoring position.
Much like Castro, Trevor May pitched well in the top of the eighth (with the free runner on second base to start the inning), but a passed ball by James McCann advanced the go-ahead run to third base and another infield hit—this time from Didi Gregorius—put the Phillies ahead for the first time in the game.
But with Francisco Lindor on second base to start the bottom of the eighth inning, Pete Alonso came through with an RBI single to tie the game at three. A grounder by Jeff McNeil on which the Phillies were unable to turn two, a walk from Michael Conforto, and an infield hit from James McCann loaded the bases for Jonathan Villar with one out and Villar sent a 3-2 pitch from Hector Neris far enough into left field to score the winning run for the Mets.
