Two years ago, the group Veterans Serving Veterans in Cadillac offered a portion of their park land to the Cadillac High School cross country team to build a new course.
“We’ve never had a course before that we were necessarily proud of,” said Assistant cross country coach Trevor Thiebaut. “When it’s all said and done, this will be a top five course in Michigan.”
Along with the veterans, members of the cross country team have been volunteering their time on the weekends to help out with the course.
“We’re currently going through and picking out the big sticks and rocks that’ll get in the way of when they go through again and till it all up,” said senior Brayden Oberhaus.
Cross country team member Logan Boolman has been running cross country since the 6th grade. While he’s a senior this year, he is still excited to help out with the new course.
“The last course we had was at Mackinac Trail,” said Boolman. “Very few teams could show up to meets because it wasn’t the most enjoyable course to run. Now building this with a course that’s flat and it’s like an enjoyable place out in the woods where we can run, I think it’s going to be really good for the team and upcoming classes.”
The team said without the generosity of the veterans, they wouldn’t have this opportunity.
“They didn’t have to do that, but they are, and with our help I think we both can create something amazing,” said Boolman. “It also shows a lot to the community what cross country and what the vets really do for us.”
Veterans Serving Veterans and the Cadillac cross country team hope to have the course completed by the first week of August for a special memorial 5k run honoring Olympian and Cadillac native Paul McMullen.
