Those keen to sail away from the Covid-19 pandemic and other travails of the past year can literally do just that this April in beautiful, balmy Bermuda.
As an official host of the SailGP Bermuda Grand Prix, the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club (a Fairmont-managed hotel) is offering an exclusive SailGP VIP Package from April 22-26, 2021. Available for up to 13 guests, the luxurious, four-day weekend includes floating front-row seats to the premier event of the second SailGP championship, which attracted a worldwide audience of 1.8 billion during its inaugural 2019 season.
The singular sojourn begins early on April 22 with a flight via Legacy 600 jet to Bermuda from Westchester County Airport in Westchester, NY. (All of Bermuda’s Covid-19 protocols—including a negative PCR test taken no more than 5 days before departure—will apply.) After another PCR test upon arrival at the newly built, state-of-the-art passenger terminal at L.F. Wade International Airport, you’ll meet your driver for your transfer to the iconic hotel, which opened in 1885 and is known locally as the “Pink Palace.”
Upon arrival, you’ll be escorted to the Fairmont Gold wing for private check-in and a tour of the newly renovated lounge, where breakfast, afternoon tea, and desserts are served daily. You can soak up the views of Hamilton Harbour’s crystalline waters from your balcony while you await your test results; once you’re cleared, the dedicated Fairmont Gold concierge team can make any reservations you desire to explore Bermuda’s myriad charms.
The oldest British Overseas Territory since 1949, the 21-square-mile seafaring nation is renowned for its pink sand beaches and reef-lined shores that house over 300 shipwrecks—more per square mile than anywhere else on Earth. Once called the “Isle of Devils” for its treacherous undersea topography, the island also has a sailing legacy intrinsic to its 400-year-old history: the Bermuda Rig, invented here and still the typical configuration for most modern sailboats.
As VIP guests of the hotel and SailGP—billed as the Formula One of sailing—you’ll have access to the exclusive, on-site Adrenaline Lounge before race time on April 24-25, where nibbles, cocktails, and local tunes will help set the celebratory mood. You’ll then be whisked away on a fully-catered spectator catamaran to witness the heart-pounding action from the peerless vantage point of the waves. On Monday morning, April 26, you’ll return via the same private jet to Westchester, NY, newly exhilarated by your high-octane maritime adventure.
The Bermuda Grand Prix kicks off the eight-race second season of SailGP. Its eight teams—Australia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, and the United States—all race F50 catamarans, which exceed speeds of 50 knots (nearly 60 mph). Established in 2018 by Oracle founder Larry Ellison and America’s Cup veteran Russell Coutts, the elite contest culminates in a winner-takes-all $1 million prize—which in 2019 went to the Australian team, helmed by Olympic gold medalist and America’s Cup winner, Tom Slingsby. Season 2, initially scheduled for 2020, was postponed due to the pandemic; after additional races in Italy, England, Denmark, Spain, France, and New Zealand, the 2021-2022 season will conclude with the United States Grand Prix in San Francisco, scheduled for March 26-27, 2022.
The SailGP VIP package starts at $6,000 per person, based on double occupancy and a requisite four-night stay (single occupancy rates are available upon request); booking is subject to a minimum number of packages purchased.
