COURSE WORK — Obion County Central High School senior Garrett Petty, a student in the school’s Criminal Justice 3 class, paused to regain his composure Wednesday while maneuvering a Drunk Busters pedal kart around a course under the watchful eye of Obion County sheriff’s Sgt. Kyle Kirk. The drunk-driving exercise was part of a condensed student version of the Citizens Sheriff’s Academy currently being conducted by the Obion County Sheriff’s Office at both OCCHS and Union City High School. The participants at OCCHS are students in teacher Heath Cunningham’s advanced criminal justice classes. Two of the pedal karts, which utilize special goggles to give the drivers a sense of being impaired, were on loan from the Dresden Police Department. A future student CSA class will have youths at both schools participating in mock trials in which they play the roles of judge, prosecutor, defense attorney and other key players. Meanwhile, the second annual Citizens Sheriff’s Academy class for adults is slated to kick off in March.
