MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - As we continue to recover from the impacts from Hurricane Florence, there are 4 reminders that we are still in the midst of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Thankfully none of these areas show any impacts on the U.S. but they are areas we are watching. Here are the latest notes from the National Hurricane Center as of 8AM Saturday morning.
Area 1: Near Bermuda
Chance of formation; By this weekend: 10%; By mid next week: 30%
NHC Discussion: "A broad area of low pressure located about 200 miles south of Bermuda is producing only minimal shower activity. Strong upper- level winds are expected to diminish by Sunday or Monday, which could allow for some slow development of this system while it moves westward and then northwestward over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. By the middle of next week, upper-level winds are likely to strengthen again, which would limit additional development as the system moves closer to the southeastern coast of the United States."
While this area appears close to our shores, the only impacts, if any, would be a chance for scattered showers midweek. NO hurricane or tropical storm impacts are expected. This system, if it were to develop would not be named Florence, and instead take the next name on the list.
Area 2: Tropical Depression 11 in Central Atlantic
NHC: "The center of Tropical Depression Eleven was located near latitude 13.0 North, longitude 53.5 West. The depression is moving slowly toward the west near 5 mph (7 km/h). A slow westward or west-northwestward motion is expected during the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next day or so, and the depression is expected to dissipate east of the Lesser Antilles by Sunday night."
Area 3: Off African Coast
Chance of formation: By this weekend: 80%; By mid next week: 80%
NHC: "Shower and thunderstorm activity continues to become better organized near the center of a low pressure system located about 500 miles south of the southern Cabo Verde Islands, and a tropical depression appears to be forming. If these trends continue, advisories will be initiated on this system later today while the low moves westward at about 20 mph."
Area 4: North Atlantic:
NHC: "Satellite imagery indicates that a non-tropical low pressure system is forming along a frontal boundary about 900 miles west-southwest of the Azores. Conditions are expected to become conducive for the low to acquire subtropical or tropical characteristics, and a subtropical or tropical cyclone is likely to form by early next week while the low meanders over the central Atlantic Ocean.
