Lowell men planned Bermuda cruise; Florence had other ideas

Months ago, four Lowell men booked a cruise to Bermuda, but Hurricane Florence had different plans for them.

About a week before they were anticipating setting sail for 90-degree weather in Bermuda, 23-year-old Brennan Cassidy and his three friends were notified of the imminent hurricane. Initially, the trip was still to go as planned.

But as the date to set out for vacation drew closer, the friends learned they would never make it to Bermuda -- at least not on this trip. Instead, they would head to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. They left Sept. 7 and return home today.

"We were a little upset that we weren't going to Bermuda because we were going from about 90 degrees in Bermuda to about 60 degrees in Nova Scotia," Cassidy said. "It was different than what we were expecting, but was still a fantastic trip."

Cassidy and his three friends Zach Cousineau, Richard Prou and William Burgess all attended Lowell High School. They have been making annual trips together since high school, but this was their first major vacation.

Cassidy remembers people's disappointment on the cruise ship upon learning they wouldn't be on the sandy beaches of Bermuda, but said as time went on, people became more optimistic and happy with the situation.

While the trip was unforgettable, Cassidy said he and his friends haven't given up on their plan.

"This has been awesome, but next year we're actually going to go to Bermuda," Cassidy said.
