Bermuda Triangle mystery SOLVED? Super storms creating 100ft waves 'dragged down ships'

Dr Simon Boxall, of the National Oceanography Centre at the University of Southampton, has said the massive cyclones could explain the numbers of ships that have disappeared in the area.

The scientist says these storms are effectively created when two or three separate weather formations merger, creating a monster storm.

He told Daily Star Online: “It can happen pretty much anywhere, but the sort of places we see them are include places like the tip of South America, Cape Horn and the tip of South Africa, the Cape of Good Hope.

“For example, places like the Cape of Good Hope where they are quite renowned, you get a storm in the Indian Ocean, a storm in the South Atlantic and a storm in the Southern Ocean and the convergence of these wave systems from those storms will create the ‘perfect storm’.

“These waves – rogue waves – can occur anywhere. And what happens is the crest of the two sets of waves add up and you get a super wave. Suddenly out of the blue, you get a wave that is 30 metres (100 ft) high.”

The Bermuda Triangle – also known as the Devil’s Triangle – is a large region in the North Atlantic Ocean between Florida, Bermuda and Puerto Rico.

It includes a high concentration of shipping lanes, with vessels crossing ports in the Americas, Europe and the Caribbean.

The area is infamous for the large number of ships and planes that have vanished while sailing or flying across it.

MYSTERIOUS: Numerous theories have been put forward over the year to explain the disappearances (Pic: GETTY)

However, Dr Boxall has said any aircraft that have gone missing over the triangle is pure coincidence, pointing out that many of them vanished before the advent of GPS technology.

But the oceans expert said it is an entirely natural phenomenon that explains the dozens of ships sinking.

He continued: “With the super wave, they don’t move across the ocean, they suddenly appear rather than move across the ocean.

“The suddenly appear and disappear and only during one of these storms, which is why the chance of a ship being in the wrong place at the right time are slim. Although of course, it does happen.

COINCIDENCE: Dr Simon Boxall believes any aircraft disappearances are coincidental (Pic: GETTY)

“It’s not a theory, it’s a fact. If a super wave hits a cargo ship, it has the possibility of breaking that in two and it sinks very quickly.

“So there have been cases where cargo ships have disappeared very suddenly and there has been no mayday sent.

“If a cargo ship is unlucky enough to be hit by one of these super waves then it has probably only got a couple of minutes before it sinks. It will happen so quickly there won’t be time to send out a mayday.”
