Bermuda were left to rue two defensive errors in a 2-2 draw against home nation Guayna in their opening Concacaf Women’s Championship qualifying match in Leonora last night.
The Lady Gombeys led twice through Teyah Lindo’s first-half brace but gifted their opponents a way back into the match and ultimately a share of the spoils through some mental lapses.
“It feels like a loss and I think we let ourselves down,” Naquita Robinson, the Bermuda coach, said. “They scored their goals from defensive errors and the girls feel a bit down. We gave the ball away too much and that’s what it boils down to.”
Midfielder Lindo gave Bermuda a dream start at the Synthetic Track and Field Facility when she opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a 35-yard strike after intercepting a goal kick.
Bermuda’s joy was shortlived, though, as the home side took only three minutes to draw level after intercepting a wayward pass deep in their opponent’s half. But Bermuda quickly settled back into a groove and regained the lead through Lindo’s 25-yard free kick to take a 2-1 advantage into the break.
“Teyah played phenomenally both in attack and defence,” Robinsons said.
The Lady Gombeys tried their best in the second half to protect their slim lead but were unable to contain Guyana who equalised in the 76th minute after a free kick slipped through the hands of Bermuda goalkeeper Micah Pond.
“The ball was in the goalkeeper’s hands and it was like it went off her fingertips,” Robnson said. “It was a simple catch and uncharacteristic of Micah but these things happen.”
Bermuda’s remaining group E matches in the round-robin tournament will be on May 25 and 27 when they meet Barbados and Suriname.
The group winner will advance to the final round of the Caribbean region, which is scheduled for August 25 to September 2.
