The Bermuda High is back! Why that's not a good thing

Up until last week we were really enjoying some Spring weather. We were getting Cold fronts on a regular basis and some fairly consistent rainfall. Temperatures were hanging in the 80s for highs and even some 50s and low 60s to start out most days. The biggest thing for me was that the humidity for the most part remained low. And low humidity in April and May is pretty much unheard of in South Texas. So what's changed? All of a sudden the temperatures are around 90 degrees in the afternoons and the humidity is back! The cold fronts have stopped passing and the rainfall has become a lot more spotty.

The answer has to do with a huge high pressure system that has set up just in the last couple of weeks that we commonly hear called"The Bermuda High". It's a semi-permanent, subtropical area of high pressure in the North Atlantic Ocean off the East Coast of North America that normally spreads East across the Atlantic Ocean and west across the Eastern and Central U.S.

Once it establishes itself it does a couple of things to our weather pattern here in South Texas that some of us are all too familiar with. It tends to force the fronts North into the Plains and miss us. It also drives a lot of Low-Middle and upper level moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico and this is what keeps us perpetually humid. And depending on how strong the High gets, it can really drive up our temperatures in the heart of out summers.

So it's here, and that means we're going to see a whole lot more 90 degree days from here on out. Enjoy!
