Firefighters tackled two fires within an hour of each other in Pembroke on Wednesday.
There was a trash-can fire outside the Hamilton bus terminal just before 5pm and another fire at an abandoned residence in Pembroke at about 5.40pm.
The two fires followed a fire at the airport dump on Tuesday evening and another fire at Boatport Boat Storage in St George’s in the early hours of last Thursday.
The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service has not yet confirmed whether the fires are linked or believed to have involved foul play, but the Bermuda Police Service has not yet been engaged in the related investigations.
“At 5.39pm on Wednesday, December 20, a call for service came in to the BFRS dispatch call centre reporting that flames were visible at an abandoned house located on the corner of King Street and Elliott Street,” the BFRS said.
“The fire was primarily contained to the basement area of the building.
“Fire service vehicles from the Hamilton and Port Royal stations were dispatched. Upon arrival firefighters found the lower level of the abandoned dwelling to be fully involved.
“Three BFRS vehicles were dispatched in response to this incident.
“Firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames and navigate the challenging conditions presented by the abandoned structure.
“There were no reported injuries or casualties resulting from the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.”
The BFRS reminds the public that the use of abandoned or derelict houses for shelter can present a significant challenge for the safety of firefighters and poses a risk to those using them.
“Community members are reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or concerns relating to abandoned buildings promptly to the BPS,” the BFRS said.
Of the trash-can fire, the BFRS said: “At 4.56pm a call for service came in to the BFRS dispatch call centre reporting that flames were visible inside of a trash can outside the bus terminal.
“One fire service vehicle from the Hamilton station was dispatched.
“Upon arrival, four firefighters found the trash can smouldering and extinguished what was left of the fire. The fire was out at 5.06pm.”
The investigations into the airport dump fire and boatyard fire are still under way.
According to the statement, the BFRS “has made tremendous efforts to tackle the recent fires that have occurred since the St George’s Boatyard Fire, which occurred on December 14.
“Their swift response and commitment to public safety deserve our utmost appreciation.
“The past few weeks Bermuda has unfortunately witnessed very serious fire incidents that posed significant threats to residents and property. In the face of these challenges, the BFRS has demonstrated their unwavering commitment to protecting the community and ensuring the safety of all individuals involved.
“The BFRS is comprised of highly trained professional and has consistently exemplified their expertise, bravery, and tireless work ethic. The prompt response to these fires, adeptness in handling dangerous situations and effective co-ordination with other local agencies has been instrumental in mitigating the impact of these incidents.”
