Deion Sanders-Inspired 'Prime Time' Course Being Offered at Colorado - Newsweek

Deion Sanders' influence has been felt across the University of Colorado Boulder campus in his first year leading the school's football program. Pretty soon, that will include the classroom.

Colorado is offering an elective course inspired by "Coach Prime" for the 2024 spring semester appropriately titled "Prime Time: Public Performance and Leadership." The class is designed to assist college athletes in an era where they can profit off of their name, image and likeness (NIL). No, the college and pro football Hall of Famer is not teaching the course. That will be done by a "variety of media experts on the CU Boulder campus," the school said in a release.

But Sanders' ability to market himself will undoubtedly be at the center of class discussion.

"Coach Prime" has seemingly been everywhere since taking the Colorado football job last December. Sanders graced the cover of GQ and was featured on 60 Minutes this year. Then there's the Amazon documentary series in which he stars. Oh, and his sunglasses line that has garnered national attention. The list goes on.

"The course will focus on helping college athletes explore how to manage their time in college, prepare for [their] career, manage their celebrity, identify when to best speak into their profit center, advocate for worthy causes, coordinate with sports agents and [teach] how to interact with journalists in the media," the school said in a release announcing the course.

The class will be available to College of Media, Communication, and Information majors and minors with 45 credit hours or more who meet the required prerequisites, according to the school.

Newsweek reached out to the University of Colorado Boulder via email for additional comment.

Colorado football finished 4-8 in its first season under Sanders, recently named Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year. The Buffaloes jumped out to a 3-0 start— including a season-opening win over last year's national runner-up TCU—and reached as high as No. 18 in the Associated Press rankings. But that success wasn't sustained.

The Buffs lost eight of their last nine games. Colorado finished with a 1-8 record against Pac-12 opponents, putting the school at the bottom of the conference.

Sanders has already started retooling his roster via the transfer portal, building around his son, QB Shedeur Sanders, and two-way star Travis Hunter. And speaking of NIL, the younger Sanders and Hunter are among the most valuable athletes at the college level, per On3's valuation.

Regardless of Colorado's record, the former All-Pro cornerback is thankful that the Colorado faithful have embraced him so passionately.

"The love and support and the hunger and thirst that our student body and our fan base have—man, they are unbelievable," Sanders said during a Zoom interview with Newsweek last week. "It is un-darn-believable the love and support from our Buffs fans. I absolutely adore it. I have never experienced anything like it."
