CEDAR CITY — Spring is right around the corner and Southern Utah University’s Community Education program is inviting residents to welcome the new season by learning some new hobbies. Hands-on courses include letterpress printing, event planning, gardening and pickleball.
Melynda Thorpe, the executive director of SUU Community & Workforce Development, emphasized the power of learning during the spring season.
“As spring breathes life into the world around us, engaging in creative learning fosters self-discovery, growth, and development,” said Thorpe in a press release. “Our spring classes are designed to get you out with friends and loved ones to learn something new and bloom along with the season.”
The first class offered is the “Art of Letterpress Printing,” a four-week course starting Jan. 23. Participants will immerse themselves in the fundamentals of press operation, typesetting and linoleum carving. Combining typography with hand-carved imagery, students can design and print their creations.
“How to Host the Perfect Dinner Party” begins on Feb. 6. This interactive class is taught by an executive chef in a professional kitchen. Curriculum covers table setting, plating, and events.
A Cedar City climate centric gardening class called “Gardening from the Ground Up” starts on Feb. 7. Instructors Neal and Valerie Pack will guide participants in yard preparation, while the “Preserving the Harvest” class starting March 7 teaches techniques like freezing, canning and dehydration for year-round homegrown produce.
“Our local growing conditions can be a challenge for home gardeners,” said Valerie Pack. “Understanding safe food preservation methods allows you to take advantage of grocery sales, farmer’s markets and even your own garden to build your home pantry.”
Local artist Larry Lawoski teaches the basics of watercolor painting on Jan. 18. The course will cover everything from transparency and color theory to composition and style. Lawoski also instructs an intermediate American Sign Language class on Jan. 15 for those looking to improve on existing skills.
And this spring, on April 29, a pickleball class guided by instructor Jeremy Waite begins. Participants will learn serving techniques, grips, forehand and backhand hitting and the basic rules of this rapid-growing sport.
