Plans are under way for the government to publicly recognise Bermuda’s Special Olympians.

In a statement released by the department of Youth, Sport, and Recreation, Owen Darrell said: “Planning is currently underway to welcome the team to the Cabinet Office so that all of Bermuda can recognise our Special Olympians”.

“We believe that each of them should be celebrated for representing Bermuda on the world stage with dignity, determination, and integrity.”

The day’s planned festivities will begin with a motorcade ending at the Cabinet Office, where the Olympians will then be presented with certificates of acknowledgement. That wil be followed by a lunch reception at the Flora Duffy National Sports Centre Pavilion for them and their family members.

The Department of Communications did not disclose when the events are planned to take place, saying that “the public will be formally notified of the date of the recognition activities”.

The Special Olympics World Games is an international sports event in which athletes with intellectual disabilities showcase their talents and compete in various sports disciplines.

At this year’s Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Bermuda was represented by nineteen athletes who won a combined eleven medals.
