Two athletes who provided a thrilling finish at the USATF Grand Prix in Bermuda will get the chance to compete for the US team in the 100 metres at this year’s World Championships.
Christian Coleman ran a wind-assisted time of 9.78sec at the Flora Duffy Stadium in May to beat his compatriot Noah Lyles by just 0.02sec, and the two men have gone on to excel at the US qualifying competition in Eugene, Oregon, this weekend.
The 27-year-old Coleman finished second to Cravont Charleston in the final, running a time of 9.96sec, with Lyles finishing third in 10.00sec.
Those performances have ensured that Lyles, Coleman and Charleston will form part of a four-man squad, along with Fred Kerley, for the US at the World Championships, which takes place in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19 to 27.
Coleman competed for the US at the 2016 Olympics and won gold in the 4x100 relay at the 2019 World Championships. His personal best of 9.76sec makes him the sixth-fastest man in history.
Lyles won a bronze medal in the 200 metres at the 2020 Olympics and won the event at the 2019 and 2022 world championships.
