The Mets offense had a late burst of life with three home runs in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to stop the free fall as they lost to the Phillies for the second straight day, this time by a score of 5-3.
The Phillies went with a bullpen game which greatly befuddled the Mets hitters perhaps even more so than their usual befuddlement. They couldn’t string any hits together early on and seemed to just be waiting for Philadelphia to take the lead.
They eventually did in the fifth off Tylor Megill. Brad Miller led off the inning with a home run, his first of two bombs in the game, and it unraveled from there. The final blow was a three-run home run off the bat of Odubel Herrera that ended Megill’s night and any hope of a comeback despite it being just the fifth inning.
The team plodded along for the next three innings until the ninth. Michael Conforto, Jonathan Villar, and James McCann all left the yard but the deficit was too much to overcome as they continue to fall in the standings.
