The Mets finally snapped their five game losing streak. topping the Giants in extras, 6-2. For most of the game, this felt like ever other recent loss; Tylor Megill was great, but the offense took the day off, and the Mets went into the ninth down 1-0. An HBP, single, and a J.D. Davis sacrifice fly tied the game however, and the Mets were eventually able to prevail in extras thanks to Kevin Pillar’s three-run home run in the twelfth.
We mentioned Megill already, but the bullpen deserves a ton of credit in this one as well. Edwin Diaz in particular was excellent; he threw a scoreless bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras after Davis’ game tying RBI, then worked around the free runner in the bottom of the tenth after the Mets failed to score in the top half. Miguel Castro, Trevor May, and Jake Reed all threw scoreless innings as well, with the latter earning the save.
The win gets the Mets back to .500, at 60-60. They still have seven more games against the Dodgers and Giants coming up, with a four game series in LA starting tomorrow night with Taijuan Walker on the mound. The news isn’t all good, however, as Pete Alonso left the game after being hit in the arm by a pitch. Hopefully it won’t be anything serious.
Full recap to follow.
