The Mets dropped their third game in four days to the Marlins, losing their matinee finale 4-2 at loanDepot Park. The story of this game is one of missed opportunities, as New York left 15 on base and squandered countless chances to cash in throughout the course of the afternoon.
The Mets loaded the bases with no outs in the first and failed to score, which really told you all you needed to know. Rich Hill got the ball and had his best outing as a Met, pitching five innings and allowing just an unearned run in the third. That run was the result of a Miguel Rojas single, which Michael Conforto booted to advance him over to second, a stolen base, and a Jazz Chisholm Jr. sacrifice fly.
The Mets tied it up in the sixth against Miami’s bullpen, as Jonathan Villar singled to drive in Albert Almora Jr., who had three hits in the game, matching his previous total for the entire season. The Mets were unable to score from there, and the Marlins broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth against Jeurys Familia. In that frame, Miami scored three against Familia after the reliever thought he should have gotten a called third strike to the second batter of the inning. That opened the floodgates and sunk the Mets
The Mets loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, thanks to two errors and a walk, and had a chance to tie things up. Brandon Drury hit an infield dribbler that went for a hit and made it a two-run game, but Almora Jr. was unable to pick up his fourth hit of the game and, instead, grounded out to end it. Javier Báez became the sixth Met to pick up the platinum sombrero, striking out five times in this one.
The Mets now hold a one-game lead in the division, with the Phillies set to play later this afternoon. They will travel to Philadelphia next to face their closest division foe.
