It feels like every Mets game follows a similar script these days: fall behind early and try to come back, but fall short. Tonight, the Mets followed that script to the letter. The Dodgers manufactured a run in the first inning off Carlos Carrasco thanks to a leadoff double from Trea Turner and then a fly ball that advanced him to third base and an RBI groundout.
The Dodgers added two more against Carrasco in the third inning. The rally started with Trea Turner reaching base for the second time—this time via a bloop single. Max Muncy doubled to drive him in and then Cory Seager laced a single to score Muncy and put the Mets in a three-run deficit.
Carrasco settled down very nicely after that, however, retiring eight in a row to get through five innings on 78 pitches—the most he’s thrown in a start so far. He fanned six Dodgers to keep the Mets in the game.
Pete Alonso got the Mets on the board with a laser line drive solo homer in the fourth, but were otherwise completely shut down by Walker Buehler until the eighth inning when the Mets managed a rally. Patrick Mazeika got things started with a leadoff single. He advanced to second on a one-out infield hit by Brandon Nimmo, which put the tying run on base. A wild pitch then advanced that tying run into scoring position for the struggling Jeff McNeil, who put together a strong at-bat to work the count full and was called out on strikes on a pitch that seemed well inside. Pete Alonso then hit a dribbler up the third base line for an infield hit that scored Mazeika to pull the Mets within a run.
That was the end of Buehler’s day and he was replaced by Alex Vesia. Michael Conforto put together a lengthy at-bat, working a ten-pitch walk to load the bases. But J.D. Davis couldn’t catch up to the high fastballs from Vesia and then was called out on strikes to quash the rally.
Meanwhile, Mets pitchers combined to retire 17 Dodgers in a row; Aaron Loup, Trevor May, and Seth Lugo each contributed a scoreless inning in relief. But the Mets went down meekly against Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen in the ninth to cap off another frustrating close loss to the Dodgers.
The Mets have lost seven of their last eight and fall to six games out of first place.
