The Cubs dropped the first half of today’s double-header, with the Brewers playing long ball thrice to account for their scoring. Cubs had a ton of opportunities to do serious damage, and didn’t come through.
I would call Justin Steele’s debut a success, even with the two dingers. The first time through the order, he got almost exclusively groundballs using the two-seamer and the slider, which was pretty fun to see. That second time through, they were on it bit more, and I’m wondering if he didn’t have the great feel for the four-seamer and/or curveball today (his whiff pitches). He wound up notching just one strikeout on the day, and a surprisingly small number of swinging strikes. I expect a lot of that was intentionally trying to get contact early, as he was seeking to go deeper as a starter and “save” some things (pitches and oomph) for later on a very hot day. His velocity was down from where he sat as a reliever, as were his spin rates. Is that a sticky stuff change or just a matter of a different approach as a starter (and also your spin will come down as your velocity comes down)? Both? Neither?
Whatever the case, Steele definitely looked like a guy who CAN succeed as a starter, but he’ll probably have to have at least three of his four pitches available on most days (and/or get a good changeup working). One data point in the books, and none of us should take away too much from it. I liked what I saw, and should probably leave it there for now.
Nice day for Rafael Ortega, who just keeps collecting hits (three more of ’em today). One of those three hits was in the Cubs’ attempted comeback in the 7th – they loaded the bases against Devin Williams with one out, but he is just so nasty. Got Patrick Wisdom on the changeup and Greg Diechmann on 98 mph at the top of the zone.
