Update: Alabama beats Arizona, 5-1.
After a big upset earlier Thursday, Alabama is set to open the Women’s College World Series against Arizona in the evening session. No. 1 softball team Oklahoma was stunned by James Madison earlier in Oklahoma City to set the stage for two powers in the Crimson Tide and Wildcats. Seventh inning
Top: Arizona ended the strikeout streak at six but a groundout didn’t make much difference. Fouts came back for the K for the second out. Down to her final strike, Wildcat Jessie Harper ripped a home run to left center and it’s 5-1 Alabama. A strikeout ended it. Alabama wins.
Sixth inning
Top: Fouts has struck out 14 of the first 18 batters she faced from an Arizona team that entered with the nation’s No. 10 batting average. She sat down the last six with strikeouts.
Bottom: Woodard recorded a two-out single for Alabama who hasn’t had much action on the bases since Hemphill’s homer. Woodard came home on a Morgan double to the left-center gap and it’s now 3-0 Alabama. And Abby Doerr broke things open with a two-run shot that makes it 5-0 Alabama.
Fifth inning
Top: Fouts’ power remains impressive. She struck out the side again to push her total to 11. Perhaps more impressive, 10 of her 11 strikeouts ended with a swing and miss.
Bottom: Alabama went down in order with a pop-out from Hemphill that went 6-8 after the SS bobble the ball caught by the CF. Alabama has just four hits but that’s enough for now with Arizona managing just the one single so far.
Fourth inning
Fourth inning
Top: Arizona got its first hit of the game but the single was negated by an inning-ending double play. Fouts is still in control.
Bottom: A one-out single came from Maddie Morgan but a fly ball to right ends the inning but Alabama is still up 2-0.
Third inning
Top: Fouts is up to six straight strikeouts. Make it seven. Now it’s eight. She’s thrown 40 pitches with 28 strikes.
Bottom: Bailey Hemphill got all of a one-out-out pitch for a solo homer and it’s 2-0 Alabama.
Second inning
Top: Fouts has five straight strikeouts with good velocity tonight. She’s thrown 28 pitches with 18 strikes.
Bottom: Alabama goes down in order with a strikeout sandwiched around two grounders. Top of the lineup coming up for the Tide in the third.
First inning
Top (Arizona): A grounder to short opens the game followed by two overpowering strikeouts by Fouts. She looked sharp in the top half.
Bottom: Bailey Hemphill and Kaylee Tow drew one-out walks with Tow’s at-bat going 11 pitches. Hemphill then motored around to score on a Jenna Johnson single to left and it’s 1-0 Alabama. A bobble in the outfield allowed Hemphill to take off for him. A deep fly to left by Sides and strikeout of Woodard ended it.
Pregame
First pitch is set for a little after 6 p.m. CT. Oklahoma State beat Georgia in the other opening-round game, 3-2 after the 4-3 James Madison win over No. 1 Oklahoma.
Montana Founts (24-3, 1.49 ERA) will get the start for Alabama while Hanah Bowen (10-3, 2.00 ERA) gets the nod for Arizona.
