What an enraging game.
For most of the night, I was feeling like the Cubs were lucky to be anywhere close. Alec Mills did not have it – missing his spots badly, and fortunate not to have given up a whole lot more damage – and the bats had some terribly ugly appearances against Julio Urias. By the time it reached the 7th inning tied at two, I was thinking it would be deserved if the Cubs ultimately lost, and would feel like such a steal if they won.
But then the Cubs got screwed, and the whole thing turned.
Jason Heyward homered to the left field corner to give the Cubs the lead, as ruled on the field by the third base ump who was RIGHT THERE watching the ball. He was then inexplicably overruled on the field, and then the play was reviewed via video. The replays were, at best, inconclusive – though I sure as shit couldn’t see the ball passing in front of the foul pole – so the call on the field stood. The call, which was an overrule of the closest umpire. And again, no video we could see actually showed a foul ball. I was, and am still, livid. If there was a better view, the FOX broadcast certainly had no interest in showing it – they showed the play twice, shrugged saying they couldn’t see anything, and moved on like nothing happened. IT WAS KIND OF AN IMPORTANT PLAY.
The Cubs didn’t score again, and Cody Bellinger walked it off.
