OK, I’m excited to live blog this game tonight. The Montreal Canadiens haven’t been in a position to clinch a trip to the Stanley Cup Final since May 24, 1993. That’s a span of 10,258 days.
And considering it’s a provincial holiday in Quebec today (St. Jean Baptiste Day) and we’ve got summer-like temperatures in the area, there is a real sense of celebration in the air. It feels like a fan base of an entire province is ready to erupt.
The Canadiens have silenced the narrative that the winners of the North Division would be rolled when they got to the final four. Instead, it’s the Vegas Golden Knights who look timid, flat and uninspired at this stage of the series.
Going back to goalie Robin Lehner is an interesting move from coach Pete DeBoer, but as Jesse Granger told us on The Athletic Hockey Show today, the goalie situation is a red herring. The real issue for Vegas is the struggles from their big guns in this series.
Mark Stone, Max Pacioretty, William Karlsson, Alex Tuch and Jonathan Marchesseault have combined for just one goal in this series. Stone is a team-worst minus-3 and only has six shots on goal in the five games to date. Make no mistake, if the Golden Knights lose this series, more heat should fall on their big guns — not on their goaltenders.
There is also a little extra incentive for the Canadiens to close out the series in Game 6 tonight. Consider this quirky stat: No Canadian team has beaten an American team in a Game 7 in this stage of the playoffs in more than 30 years.
Here’s a list of Game 7s in either the conference final or Stanley Cup Final involving a Canadian and American opponent since 1990:
2017 — Pittsburgh defeats Ottawa (Conference Final)
2011 — Boston defeats Vancouver (Stanley Cup Final)
2006 — Carolina defeats Edmonton (Stanley Cup Final)
2004 — Tampa Bay defeats Calgary (Stanley Cup Final)
2003 — New Jersey defeats Ottawa (Conference Final)
1994 — New York defeats Vancouver (Stanley Cup Final)
1993 — Los Angeles defeats Toronto (Conference Final)
The last Canadian team to beat an American team in Game 7 this late in the playoffs was the 1987 Edmonton Oilers, who defeated Philadelphia in Stanley Cup Final.
