That really did wind up turning into a June swoon. And then a June thud. And then a June turd splattering all over the Titanic as it sank (but somehow the turd remains, unwashed by the waves).
What do you really even say about a game like that to provide value to folks who either saw it and were as horrified as you were, or to folks who didn’t see it and want to understand just how back-breaking it was? I mean, the Cubs lost a game where their starting pitcher SCORED a run before throwing a pitch. And they lost it by a lot. For a sweep. To the team leading the division. At a critical juncture in their season. It was a humiliation at the end of a series that featured a wholly separate humiliation.
The Cubs got things started against a young lefty, Aaron Ashby, making his big league debut. He didn’t finish his first inning thanks to wildness and a flurry of Cubs hits. They ultimately plated seven runs, and the game should’ve effectively been over right there. But Jake Arrieta had absolutely nothing, walking multiple guys in the bottom of the first with a seven-run lead. Unacceptable. Obviously it got much worse from there, but that first inning … it told you so much. The Cubs’ bullpen came on to fully blow the lead and then blow the game open in favor of the Brewers, who won by a touchdown and a two-point conversion. A tired joke for a tired joke of a game.
When Eric Sogard has logged four appearances (all scoreless!) before the end of June, you know you’ve had some rough games. And today’s was the worst of the worst.
What comes next, we’ll see, but yes, I’m thinking the same thing everyone else is thinking about what the conclusion of this series means for the Cubs’ month ahead.
