Just a crap game, through and through, with the Cubs once again helpless against a competent Dodgers lefty. Dropping this series to the Dodgers in L.A. was never going to be the worst – or even an unpredictable – outcome. But after winning the opener, things obviously could’ve gone so much better.
Anthony Rizzo leaving mid-game with lower back tightness was the cherry on this one. We’ll update Rizzo’s info when available, but given his history, it seems unlikely he won’t miss any time. Hopefully it was just a tiny bit off, and the game was starting to get out of reach, etc.
Adbert Alzolay’s control was rough overall, but he was particularly off with his slider. And when that’s his signature pitch, he’s in for a very rough night – lotta walks, lotta rockets. There is no two ways about it, the outing was ugly and not competitive. You just hope that it is part of a development process for a young pitcher who could have as many as five usable pitches, and who may have to get better at adjusting on the fly when a pitch just isn’t going to be available to him on a given night (if that’s what happened tonight (which it sure looked like with the slider)). So there may have been some long-term value in a game like that. Here’s hoping, anyway. More on this stuff tomorrow.
Kudos to Tommy Nance for absorbing three (pretty darn good) innings to save the bullpen in a blowout, and Rex Brothers for covering two, himself.
