LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky offers an eight-week web-based Adulting 101 course this summer to help students improve essential life skills. Taught by professors and community educators from the University of Kentucky, students will apply their learning with real-world, interactive assignments and ongoing projects.

What You Need To Know

  • Course began at county level

  • Adulting 101 taken virtual after pandemic

  • Nearly 600 students participated in 2020

  • Program teaches basic life skills to teenagers considering college or the workforce

In its second year, Adulting 101 at UK began in the commonwealth’s county extension offices as a face-to-face pilot program delivered by extension agents to expand family and consumer science. After the COVID-19 pandemic began, the UK College of Agriculture partnered with the main campus to offer the course virtually and target more students in Kentucky and nationwide.

“We had participants from all over,” said Dr. Jennifer Hunter, UK extension professor and assistant director of family and consumer sciences. “It was really neat to be able to expand that reach and then also bring in expertise that we might not have had at the local-level program. We were able to build in some of those study skills pieces and time management pieces. For those students interested in post-secondary education, things about that process were incorporated, and applications were developed to really help prepare them for their next step.”

Adulting 101 begins June 15 and meets at 3 p.m. every Tuesday through Aug. 3 on Zoom. Organized by the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and the UK Cooperative Extension Service, the course is open to teenagers across the country regardless of their goals. Hunter said Adulting 101 focuses explicitly on wellbeing and life skills that facilitate the transition to life on campus or in the workforce.

More than 580 students registered for the course in 2020, such as Emily Girard, 19, of Independence, Ky., who is a junior journalism major at UK.

“Even before I went to college, I felt like I really needed to learn stuff about adult life they didn't really teach in school,” she said. “I didn't take any business classes when I was in school or anything about budgeting or cooking. I liked the cooking class the most, and I feel like I've used what I learned in that class the most.”

Hunter said she was overwhelmed with the response to this past year’s course from students and instructors.

“It was a great experience,” she said. “I'll be honest, last spring, as we were drawing up the plans, we had no idea what the response would be because students had ended their school year in virtual instruction, and we wondered if they would sign up for another virtual class. We were just blown away by the response and far exceeded our target numbers. It’s exciting to reach out to that many students in this fashion and cover the type of information we were able to cover. We were able to engage many of our faculty within the college to lead these sessions, and that was a really nice aspect of the course as well.”

Based on feedback from this past year’s attendees, the organizers added new topics and expanded lessons to this summer’s program. Girard said taking the course kept her from learning some things the hard way.

“I feel like the class covers a lot of the stuff that isn't taught in most high schools, but you still definitely need, like how to put together a resume or how to get along with roommates, because a lot of people going into college have never had a roommate before,” she said. “What is the more beneficial of the courses, I'm sure, vary from person to person. Based on what experience you have, you might already know how to cook or have great time management. The general topics bring awareness to the fact that people need to know about these things. I hope this course is the start of more programs like it in the future.”

The course costs $29.99 and capacity is limited. Students may complete registration for the course online. Recordings will be available for those unable to attend a session.
