The Mets offense was buoyed by Francisco Lindor, as the superstar shortstop drove in all five runs on the back of two home runs (in the first and fifth innings), both of which were absolutely obliterated. He also tacked on an RBI single in the third inning, following David Peterson’s first career hit, which was a beautifully struck double in the right center field gap.
Speaking of our lanky lefty, Peterson was solid again for the second straight start, though unfortunately he did not qualify for the win. He surrendered only two hits over 4.2 innings, striking out six. He was not flawless, however, as he struggled with his command. He walked three, had two wild pitches, and only threw 54 strikes in 94 pitches (a season high for him).
The Mets bullpen was an adventure, but they somehow got the job done. Aaron Loup relieved Peterson and allowed an inherited runner to score before getting Josh Harrison to strike out, and Miguel Castro got just two outs in the sixth, while also walking two in the frame. Seth Lugo cam in to relieve him and got the final out of that inning. Trevor May got himself into trouble in the seventh, allowing Trea Turner to single and walking Juan Soto on a (very) questionable 3-2 call, but a Josh Bell double play and a quick strike out of Josh Harrison put this game directly in the books.
Game two of the split double header will start at 6:05 pm, as the vaunted Mets pitcher TBA (at the time of this writing) squares off against Jon Lester.
