Coming into tonight, the Mets had not won a game at Citi Field against the Chicago Cubs since June 14, 2017. Dominic Smith had not picked up a hit since June 8. David Peterson had not thrown a pitch in the fourth inning since May 24. All of that changed tonight, as the Mets defeated the Cubs 5-2 in the first game of a four-game set.
The team had to be encouraged by Peterson, who held the Cubs to one hit over six shutout innings. He walked two and struck out three and, while he did give up some hard contact, he was never really in much danger throughout the night. The lone blemish against him was a one-out single from Eric Sogard in the third, but he erased that with a pick-off at second base to end the third inning.
Early on, the Mets couldn’t do much against Jake Arrieta, but they broke through in the fourth. Smith picked up a one-out single to end his 0-for-20 skid, and Billy McKinney drew a walk following Pete Alonso’s strikeout. That set up James McCann, who grounded a single up the middle to drive in Smith and break the scoreless tie. Kevin Pillar came up next and drove a double into the left-center gap to make it a three-run lead for the Amazins.
Smith wasn’t done breaking out, as he hit a home run to dead center field to give the Mets a four-run lead. The Mets added their fifth run in the sixth against Tommy Nancy, courtesy of a Brandon Drury pinch hit single to drive in Pillar.
Trevor May struggled in the seventh, serving up back-to-back homers to Anthony Rizzo and Patrick Wisdom to make it a 5-2 game. Aaron Loup came in and got four outs, and Edwin Díaz struck out the side in the ninth for his 13th save of the season. The win ended the Cubs’ five game winning streak and gave New York three wins in the first four games of their homestand.
