Brewers’ Nation gets to celebrate Father’s Day with a Brewers victory over the Colorado Rockies, 7-6. Early on in this one it looked as if Milwaukee was in complete control. One big inning in the bottom of the sixth changed all of that. The Rockies would come all the way back to tie the game as they hit four home runs in the inning. Fortunately, the Brewers were able to come through late to get the win.
Milwaukee got things rolling in the top of the first. Kolten Wong led the game off with a single, and that was followed by another single by Daniel Vogelbach. Vogelbach was erased from the base paths on a ground ball to Trevor Story by Christian Yelich. Luckily the Rockies were unable to turn the double play on the speedy Yelich who was safe at first. Wong advanced to third.
Wong would score on an Omar Narvaez single to left field. Yelich would later score as well when Derek Fischer singled to left. Just like that it was 2-0.
Milwaukee added two more runs in the top of the second. Jackie Bradley Jr. led things off with a single to right field. He advanced to second on an Eric Lauer sacrifice bunt. JBJ came around to score when Kolten Wong took Rockies starter, Chi Chi Gonzalez over the left field wall.
Milwaukee punched another run across in the top the fourth. With Jackie Bradley Jr. on second base via a walk and another sacrifice bunt by Lauer, Kolten Wong got his third hit of the game. This time it was a single, and it scored JBJ from second.
The Brewers scored their sixth run of the game in the top of the sixth. Derek Fisher started things off with a triple. He scored on another sacrifice bunt by Lauer. Milwaukee was rolling.
Eric Lauer got great results via the sacrifice bunt today, laying down three, one of which was an RBI. He also looked in complete control on the mound through five innings. Unfortunately the third time through the Rockies lineup in the sixth resulted in a nightmare inning for the young left-hander and his replacement. Raimel Tapia led the inning off with a single, and that was followed by a 2-run shot by Yonathan Daza. Trevor Story made it back-to-back, and just like that it was 5-3.
By the end of this inning, Milwaukee would relinquish the lead. Brewers’ manager, Craig Counsell, lifted Lauer for Zack Godley. Not long after Godley’s warm up pitches came a continuation of the Rockies’ barrage. Charlie Blackmon singled to center, and that was followed by a C.J. Cron homer to inch the Rockies closer. The Rockies just a few moments later would tie the game when Joshua Fuentes took Godley deep for the fourth Rockies’ homer of the inning.
The Brewers’ bullpen kept Colorado off the scoreboard for the rest of the game after the Fuentes home run. Hoby Milner replaced Godley and was able to pitch around a couple of singles to get out of the sixth. Brent Suter took over the bottom of the seventh and did his job. Devin Williams took over the bottom of the eighth and stuck out the side. Now things were set up for the ninth.
Jace Peterson led top of the ninth with a single to center. Peterson followed that up by stealing second and getting into scoring position. The stolen base paid off huge. Daniel Vogelbach knocked in Peterson with a clutch line drive singe to right, and the Brewers were back on top.
Brad Boxberger took over the bottom of the ninth. While Trevor Story was able to punch a single to left, Boxberger was able to induce three groundouts and get the save. With the win, the Brewers go to 40-32 and remain in a first place tie with the Cubs in the N.L. Central.
Milwaukee heads to Arizona tomorrow to take on the struggling Diamondbacks. Brett Anderson is scheduled to get the start on the mound for the Brewers. Merrill Kelly will go for Arizona. Game start is scheduled for 8:40 CT, and the game can be seen on Bally Sports Wisconsin. It can also be heard on WTMJ 620 and the Brewers Radio Network.
