Opportunistic Capitals score from all over to drop Flyers 5-4 - NBC Sports

The Capitals won their fourth-straight game, and second in-a-row, against the Flyers on Saturday at Wells Fargo Center with a 5-4 win over the Flyers.

They got contributions all over the lineup as the fourth line potted two goals, the defense jumped into the play and the powerplay tallied a goal to earn the win. The Capitals were able to withstand a late Flyers push to hold on for the win.

Washington is now 9-1-1 in its last 11 games as they kept pace with the first-place Islanders in the East. Here’s how it happened.

Ovechkin one away from 6th all-time

Alex Ovechkin tallied his 10th goal of the season on the powerplay in the second period from his trademark spot to give the Capitals a 4-2 lead. And perhaps more importantly, he scored his 716th career goal to move one behind Phil Esposito for sixth all-time.

Flyers goalie Carter Hart couldn’t make the save on the short-side as the captain doubled Washington’s lead on a pass from center Nicklas Backstrom.

Ovechkin has now scored three goals in four games.

Flyers goalies shaky

Flyers goalie Brian Elliott didn’t have his game from the star, and the Capitals took advantage with three goals on 10 shots in the first 23 minutes.

He had trouble with rebound control and positioning in his short time in the net before being replaced by Hart, who was almost just as shaky.

A Nic Dowd deflection in front early in the third period put the Capitals up 5-2 and effectively ended the game, as the puck somehow squeaked through Hart. It was Dowd’s third goal in two games. The Capitals weren’t dominant offensively in terms of possession, but they didn’t need to be.

Nick Jensen: Offensive weapon

Nick Jensen, who just recently tallied his first goal as a Capital, had one of his best offensive games in Washington.

He put a shot on net early in the first period that Carl Hagelin was able to slide between the legs of Elliott to put the Capitals up 1-0. Then, early in the second period, he placed a beautiful shot top shelf to make the score 3-1 and chase Elliott from the game.

Jensen found himself involved in the play multiple times throughout the night as he’s playing the best he has in Washington since he arrived in 2019.

Keeping pace

The Capitals have earned 19 out of a possible 22 points in their last 11 games but are still in second place in the division. And as of the end of the game in Philadelphia, the Islanders (38 points in first place) and the Penguins (33 points in third place) were winning in the third period.

The East Division will be a battle to the end and the Capitals have kept pace so far.
