The first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament has already featured some notable upsets, and another may be brewing on Saturday as No. 3 seed Kansas is struggling with No. 14 seed Eastern Washington. The Eagles punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Big Sky Conference Tournament, and they are proving they can hang with a traditional power so far.
Led by brothers Tanner Groves and Jacob Groves, EWU jumped out to a 9-0 lead early in the game and battled back to take the lead again late in the first half after Kansas appeared to find its groove. Of course, the Jayhawks are playing shorthanded. Leading rebounder Jalen Wilson, a starter and versatile offensive weapon, is out for Saturday's game.
Kansas still has ample amounts of talent, but the Eagles were tested against major conference opposition in nonconference play, and that experience appears to be helping them so far. EWU played Washington State, Arizona and Oregon close to begin the season but lost all three games. We'll see if they can close the deal this time around and secure the program's first-ever victory in the Big Dance.
