There are officers in the area already enrolled in the upcoming class
LA CROSSE, Wis (WKBT) – UW La Crosse is helping law enforcement to learn about human rights.
The six-week class for officers, investigators, and even the department of corrections staff, starts in August.
The course is based on the United Nations’ definition of human rights, which includes the right to life, liberty, and security of a person along with other protections.
The hope is that the course will be picked up around the country.
“In Wisconsin and beyond, we’ve gotten interest in Texas and Ohio. And so again, it’s something that looks promising that’s attracting the law enforcement community. And so we hope to do good things,” said Peter Marina, a professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at UWL.
