UCLA Football Final Score: UCLA 34, Cal 10 - Bruins Nation

The UCLA Bruins improved their record to 1-1 after a dominant win over the California Golden Bears, cruising to victory against their Pac-12 North rivals, 34-10. It didn’t look pretty early, but junior QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson settled into a groove and eventually took over with his legs and arm.

DTR finished the game with 196 yards through the air with three scores and another 52 yards and another score on the ground in the rout.

We’ll reassess the game notes as we went along.

Sluggish first quarter woes finally come to an end?

The first three plays on offense saw the Bruins gain one yard before ultimately having their punt blocked and setting the Bears up with a red zone opportunity on their very first offensive possession of the season. However, the Bruins defense clamped down and allowed just three total yards before limiting a field goal for the Bears.

The offense threw an interception on their very next possession but again the defense clamped down before the offense found their rhythm. Most notable in their rhythm was the fact that the elusiveness of the Bruins was on clear display.

They capped an impressive 15-play, 88-yard drive with a fourth-down conversion from the 2-yard line that saw DTR score his first TD of the day. Chip Kelly’s aggressiveness worked wonders to take a quick 7-3 lead and put the first quarter woes behind them.

Cal’s offense looks off sync but UCLA’s defense deserves credit

Alright fine — this header started when the Cal offense really looked worse for wear, and the thoughts were that UCLA’s defense was still going to have a lot to prove. Cal looked bad all game save for one drive, but in fairness, UCLA looked great on defense all game long as well, save for that same drive.

In total, they limited Cal to just 3.6 yards per pass and just 1.9 yards per rush come the end of the game. The Bears were stopped twice on fourth down and 10 times on third down, limiting them to six punts, a field goal and two turnovers on downs.

Caleb Johnson got the Bruins back to even in the turnover margin with an interception of his own, atonning for DTR’s first-quarter interception. Jay Shaw forced a deflection with a great read and break on an in route, tipping it directly into Johnson’s hands.

Demetric Felton continues to evolve

Felton showcased what was so impressive about the former wide receiver that saw him switch to running back full time a season ago and earn the starting role this year. He made multiple great reads in the game including a terrific jump cut that showcased his ‘ability in a phone booth’ as well as his vision in between the tackles.

In total, Felton ran the ball 25 times for 107 yards and caught three passes for 28 yards.

DTR hurdles his way to victory

In summation

The Bruins improved to 1-1 after a disappointing first half saw them in against Colorado last week. After everything that went down this week with the original game canceled, another game rescheduled for two days later and such an early kickoff today, this win means a bit more and gives the program quite a bit of momentum going into next week.

UCLA will need all the momentum they can get ahead of their Saturday, November 21 meeting with the 11th-ranked Oregon Ducks.

DTR and the Bruins travel to Eugene, Oregon this week for a game that has yet to have it’s kickoff time determined.

They’ve played six good quarters of football, four quarters of great football and two quarters of poor football this year. Still, 1-1 is a bit nicer than 0-2, or even 0-1.
