The 49ers squandered a big lead before coming from behind to beat the Rams in Los Angeles, 23-20, thanks to Deebo Samuel's 133 receiving yards and a defense that forced four turnovers. After taking a 17-3 third quarter lead, the 49ers allowed 17 unanswered points before tying the score with 3:11 left. San Francisco's defense then forced a punt before Robbie Gould drilled a 42-yard field goal as time expired. Samuel, who missed the 49ers' last four games with a hamstring injury, caught a career-high 11 passes that included his pivotal 24-yard catch on the game's final drive.
With the win, the 49ers snapped a three-game losing streak while improving to 5-6 on the season. The Rams are now 7-4 after dropping their second game to the 49ers.
In a first quarter that included four turnovers, Raheem Mostert's eight-yard touchdown run gave the 49ers a 7-3 lead after 15 minutes. Mostert's score was set up by Samuel, who caught two passes for 59 yards on the 49ers' five-play, 75-yard drive. The 49ers extended their lead to 17-3 less than a minute into the second half on rookie Javon Kinlaw's 27-yard pick-six. After a field goal cut the Rams' deficit to 17-6, Aaron Donald's forced fumble of Mostert was returned 21 yards for a score by cornerback Troy Hill. On the Rams' ensuing offensive possession, a 61-yard run by rookie Cam Akers set up Akers' one-yard touchdown run to start the fourth quarter.
Led by Nick Mullens, San Francisco tied the score on Robbie Gould's 44-yard field goal with just over three minutes left. After the 49ers' defense forced a punt, Samuel's 24-yard catch from Mullens, a pivotal first down run by fullback Kyle Juszczyk on fourth-and-1, and another catch by Samuel set up the 18th game-winning field goal of Gould's career.
Here's a closer look at how the 49ers were able to pull off the upset victory.
Why the 49ers won
Mullens, who went 24 of 35 for 253 yards, outplayed Rams quarterback Jared Goff, who threw two interceptions while failing to reach 200 passing yards. The 49ers' defense, which gladly welcomed the return of Richard Sherman (who recorded a first half interception of Goff), did not allow the Rams to convert on a single third down in the second half. San Francisco's defense, after allowing the Rams to score one minute into the fourth quarter, ended the game by forcing four consecutive punts.
While Robert Saleh's defense was excellent, Samuel was just as -- if not more -- essential to the 49ers' win, as the second-year receiver accounted for nearly one-third of the 49ers' offensive production.
Why the Rams lost
When you commit four turnovers, you seldom win the game. That was the case for the Rams, who on Sunday tied a season-high for turnovers committed. Aside from that, the Rams struggled to both establish the run and stop the 49ers' run game until the third quarter. While the Rams eventually figured out the run on both sides of the ball, their struggles early on allowed the 49ers to build a 17-3 lead.
Los Angeles really struggled to get anyone going on offense with the exception of Robert Woods, who caught seven passes for 80 yards. Cooper Kupp, who didn't catch a pass during the first half, finished with just 41 yards on two receptions. The Rams' inability to get anyone else involved in the passing game was a big reason why Los Angeles was just 4 of 13 on third down.
Turning point
The 49ers were in control before Donald's forced fumble of Mostert made the score 17-13 with 2:38 left in the third quarter. Donald's sack of Mullens on the 49ers' next drive helped set up the Rams' go-ahead touchdown. Donald, who did not record a tackle in the Rams' previous two games, made five tackles on Sunday while also recording his 10th sack of the season.
Play of the game
While Donald's play received consideration, the game's best play belongs to Kinlaw, who recorded his first interception and touchdown of his young career. Kinlaw's pick was the result of a good pass rush by defensive tackle Kevin Givens.
We should also acknowledge Akers' 61-yard run, which served as the game's longest play from scrimmage. After a slow start to his rookie season, Akers, the 52nd overall pick in the 2020 draft, has now scored touchdowns in consecutive games.
Quotable
"I can't tell you how good Deebo was today ... He's got a lot to work on, but he's one of the best football players I've been around." -- 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said of Samuel, via ESPN's Nick Wagoner
What's next
The Rams will travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals, who are now 6-5 after losing to the Patriots on Sunday. The Rams have won six straight games against the Cardinals. San Francisco will "host" the Bills, who are now 8-3 after defeating the visiting Chargers on Sunday, though that game will not take place at the 49ers' home stadium due to COVID-19 restrictions in Santa Clara.
