When the Falmouth Road Race gave grants to be used for health and fitness to the Falmouth Public Schools at this time last year, Teaticket Elementary School looked at its playground and came up with ideas.

Lighting upon the Elevate Fitness Course as the best option to transform the school’s playground for students and the local community, Teaticket Elementary principal Sandy M. Kapsambelis said that, at $57,000, the fitness course was “a dream.”

“We were shocked when we found out that it would be funded,” she said. “We are super grateful to the Falmouth Road Race.”

The school then realized that it would need volunteers or more money to actually install the fitness course.

The Parent Teacher Organization came up with ideas, and the school contacted local organizations and the Lawrence-Lynch Corporation for possible use of an excavator.

Because Teaticket Elementary is a Title I school, and the fitness course has options for all ages, 5 to adult, the Lawrence-Lynch Corporation surprised Ms. Kapsambelis by offering to pay for the Elevate Fitness Course to be installed, at a cost of $20,000.

Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act provides financial assistance to local educational agencies and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families.

The PTO raised money for a large dedication sign that thanks the Falmouth Road Race and the Lawrence-Lynch Corporation, and the new playground was dedicated last Friday, November 20.

“The company has an app you can load into your phone to learn the three levels to use on the course,” Teaticket school physical education teacher Carrie Shanahan wrote in a follow-up email. “We have a specific number, FIT 2632, which you enter into your phone.”

Due to COVID-19, Teaticket students are not yet able to use the fitness course during the school day, but the local community is free to use it.

Many families use the playground, basketball court and the track after school, on weekends, and in the summer, Ms. Shanahan wrote. “This is a great addition for the Falmouth community and not like any other play space in our town. Thank you to the Falmouth Road Race, Lawrence-Lynch, and the Teaticket PTO for their financial support.”

“We are lucky to live in such a generous community,” Ms. Kapsambelis said. “It is a great piece of equipment,” she said, referring to the fitness course.
